Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships tender to Eceabat on the European peninsula; some anchor off Çanakkale on the Asian side and require a ferry crossing.

Getting Ashore at Gallipoli

  • 1
Tender to Eceabat (Peninsula)Ships anchoring in the Dardanelles tender passengers to Eceabat's small ferry dock. The ride is 10–15 minutes. From Eceabat you'll need a tour bus or taxi to reach the battlefield sites — they are spread across miles of the peninsula.
  • 2
Çanakkale Option (Asian Side)A handful of ships dock at Çanakkale Kepez Port or the town pier. From the Çanakkale waterfront, public ferries cross to Eceabat every 30–60 minutes (30 min crossing). Factor ferry wait times into your schedule.
  • 3
Book a Tour — EssentialThe Gallipoli battlefields span 33,000 hectares with no public transport between sites. Book a ship excursion or a reputable private guide (TJ's Tours, Crowded House Tours) in advance. Independent taxis at Eceabat are limited and expensive.

💡 Pro move: The entire peninsula is treated as a sacred site. Maintain respectful attire and demeanor at all memorials and cemeteries.

Insider Tips

  • 🎖
Book your tour before sailing. Independent access to the battlefields is very difficult. Ship excursions and private operators like TJ's Tours and Crowded House Tours fill up fast on ANZAC-itinerary cruises.
  • Mind the ferry if at Çanakkale. Public ferries to Eceabat run every 30–60 minutes. Build in buffer time — missing the last ferry back means missing the ship.
  • 👗
Dress respectfully. The peninsula is effectively one large war cemetery. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops at the memorial sites. Carry a scarf or layer.
  • 💧
Bring water and sun protection. The open hillside sites have almost no shade. Summer heat combined with Aegean wind can be deceptively intense. Sturdy walking shoes help on uneven ground.
  • 💴
Currency: Turkish Lira (TL). Most museum entry fees are low (under $5 USD). Credit cards accepted at museums and restaurants; carry small cash for toilets and ferry tickets.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🧭 Guided Battlefield Tour

$50–$160 USD per person

The most practical way to see the WWI sites. Battlefield memorials, cemeteries, and ANZAC Cove are spread across the peninsula — a guide with minibus is the standard approach for cruise passengers.

🚕 Local Taxi

₺100–₺300+ depending on distance

Taxis are available in Çanakkale and Eceabat. Useful for short transfers, but hiring one for the full battlefield circuit can be expensive without a fixed itinerary.

🚌 Dolmuş (Shared Minibus)

₺10–₺30 per leg

Shared minibuses connect peninsula towns including Eceabat, Kilitbahir, Alçıtepe, and Seddülbahir. Cheap and local, but schedules are infrequent and sites require some walking.

⛴️ Çanakkale–Eceabat Ferry

₺10–₺20 per person

If your ship docks at Çanakkale, the short car/passenger ferry across the strait to Eceabat on the peninsula is the standard gateway to the battlefield sites.

🚗 Private Transfer

Varies; arrange in advance

Companies offer private driver packages covering the major ANZAC and Ottoman memorial sites. Best booked ahead — recommended for groups wanting flexibility without a full guided tour.
