Sanctuary of the Great Gods, Paleopoli

One of antiquity's most important religious sites — where the ancient Cabeirian mystery cult initiated members for centuries and where the Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered in 1863. The on-site museum holds a replica; the original is in the Louvre. About 6 km from port.

Rent a car or ATV at the dock. There are only 4-5 taxis on the entire island and no reliable ride-hailing. Car rental agencies are steps from the pier — book ahead, as fleets are very small.

Bring cash. ATMs are available in Kamariotissa but remote tavernas, the hot springs, and some taxis prefer euros in hand.

Wear grip shoes. The vathres rock pools are spectacularly slippery. Flip-flops are dangerous on the wet stone — bring sturdy sneakers or hiking sandals.

Watch the wind. Samothraki is one of the Aegean's windiest islands. Strong gusts can delay or cancel tender boat operations — keep your ship's departure time in mind.
