Getting Ashore

All ships arrive at Kamariotissa, the island's sole port town on the northwest coast.

Getting Ashore at Samothraki

  • 1
Small ships — dock directlyPonant, Variety, Windstar, and similar vessels berth alongside the Kamariotissa mole. Walk off and you're in town immediately.
  • 2
Medium ships — tender inShips anchoring in the bay run regular tender boats to the Kamariotissa marina. Allow 10-15 minutes each way; watch for wind delays — Samothraki is famously gusty.
  • 3
Rent transport in portCar, scooter, and ATV rental agencies are right on the harbor front. Reserve in advance — fleets are tiny. There are only 4-5 taxis on the island; don't rely on flagging one down.
  • 4
Bus optionPublic buses link Kamariotissa with Chora, Paleopoli (Sanctuary of the Great Gods), and Therma in summer — but schedules follow the mainland ferry, not cruise ships. Renting is safer.

💡 Pro move: Strong north winds (the island's nickname ties to Aeolus, god of wind) can delay or cancel tenders. Check with your ship before exploring far from port.

Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Rent a car or ATV at the dock. There are only 4-5 taxis on the entire island and no reliable ride-hailing. Car rental agencies are steps from the pier — book ahead, as fleets are very small.
  • 💶
Bring cash. ATMs are available in Kamariotissa but remote tavernas, the hot springs, and some taxis prefer euros in hand.
  • 👟
Wear grip shoes. The vathres rock pools are spectacularly slippery. Flip-flops are dangerous on the wet stone — bring sturdy sneakers or hiking sandals.
  • 🌬️
Watch the wind. Samothraki is one of the Aegean's windiest islands. Strong gusts can delay or cancel tender boat operations — keep your ship's departure time in mind.
  • 🐐
Eat the goat. Samothraki's wild goats graze on sea herbs and drink mineral water, giving the meat a uniquely flavored taste. Try katsikaki (spit-roasted goat) at a mountain taverna in Profitis Ilias — it's the island's signature dish.
