Insider Tips

  • 🏰
Castle is closed Tuesdays. Check the day of your call before planning the uphill walk — the castle is the port's standout sight and worth scheduling around.
  • 🥃
Order ouzo the right way. Always over ice — it turns milky white and becomes mellow. Local brands Plomari and Barbayanni are the real deal.
  • 🐟
Try the sardines. Kalloni sardines from the island's inland gulf are a protected Greek delicacy — cured in salt or grilled fresh, they are served at almost every ouzeri.
  • 🚗
Rent a car for longer calls. Mytilene is just a fraction of the island. If you have 8+ hours, renting a car unlocks Molyvos, Petra, and the north coast. Book automatics in advance — they disappear fast.
  • 💶
Agree on taxi fares upfront. Taxis wait at the port but not all use meters. Settle the price before you get in. For the Roman aqueduct at Moria, expect around €10–12 each way.

🚶 Walk

Free

The cruise port sits right in the heart of Mytilene town. The waterfront promenade, shops, cafes, and the old bazaar are all within easy walking distance.

🚕 Taxi

€7–13

Metered taxis queue at the port exit. Fares within Mytilene town run roughly €7–10; night rates (midnight–5am) are higher. Cash is recommended as card acceptance varies.

📱 Taxi App (Radiotaxi / FreeNow)

€7–13

Radiotaxi Mytilene (radiotaxi-mytilene.gr) and FreeNow app can be used to book licensed local taxis; useful for pre-booking a return pickup from excursion sites.

🚌 Local Bus (KTEL)

€1–3

Blue KTEL buses cover Mytilene town and suburbs cheaply. Green KTEL intercity buses reach village destinations across the island; buy tickets at the KTEL station near the port.

🚗 Car Rental

€35–60/day

Several rental agencies operate near the port. A rental car is the best way to explore Lesbos' petrified forest, thermal baths at Thermi, and the medieval village of Molyvos in a single day.
