Insider Tips

  • Check your ship's docking situation. Large ships often call at Souda Bay (Chania) and bus passengers to Rethymno — a 50-minute transfer each way. Confirm before planning your day.
  • 🍽️
Skip the harbourfront restaurants. The Venetian Harbor is beautiful but prices are inflated and touts are persistent. Walk one block inland for authentic Cretan food at honest prices.
  • 🏰
Visit the Fortezza early. It opens at 8:30 AM and gets busy by mid-morning. The walk up is 20 minutes from the harbor — go first before the heat builds.
  • 💶
Carry some cash. Cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops, but small tavernas, market stalls, and entrance fees are cash-preferred. ATMs are plentiful in the Old Town.
  • 🌞
Sun protection is essential. The walk along the harbor breakwater and inside the Fortezza offers almost no shade. Hat, sunscreen, and water are mandatory in summer.
