Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Take the public bus. Line 13 from the port gate costs ~€1.50 and runs every 20 min — far cheaper than the cruise shuttle and nearly as fast.
  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. Chania's Old Town is paved with uneven cobblestones and polished Venetian marble — slippery when wet, tough on flip-flops.
  • ⚠️
No photos of military vessels. Souda Bay is an active NATO naval base. Photography of ships, submarines, or facilities is prohibited and enforced.
  • 🍽
Step back from the harbor front to eat. Restaurants one or two streets into the Old Town are markedly better value and quality than the tourist-facing waterfront spots.
  • 🏖
Skip Balos and Elafonissi unless it's a ship excursion. These famous beaches are 1.5–2+ hours each way — too far to attempt independently on a standard call.
