Folegandros Island, Cyclades, Greece

One of the Cyclades' best-kept secrets, Folegandros rewards those who make the tender crossing with whitewashed clifftop villages, a living medieval fortress, and beaches that have barely changed in centuries.

Getting Ashore

All cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the small harbor of Karavostasis — plan your transport to Chora before stepping off the tender.

Getting Ashore at Folegandros

  • 1
Tender to KaravostasisShip tenders land at the small quay in Karavostasis. The harbor has a pebble beach, a few tavernas, and ATV/car rental shops. Walking to Chora (3 km, steep, no shade) is not recommended in summer heat.
  • 2
Bus to ChoraA local bus meets the tenders and runs to Chora in about 10 minutes (€2–3, cash only). Check the posted return schedule at the Chora bus stop before you leave the port.
  • 3
Taxi or ATVTaxis are scarce (fewer than five on the island) — don't rely on flagging one down. Renting an ATV or scooter from the port is the best way to explore the island on your own schedule; book in advance in July–August.

💡 Pro move: Budget at least 1 hour to return to the port before final boarding — bus frequency is limited and tenders add extra time.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Folegandros has no deep-water cruise pier; all vessels anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore.

From the tender dock, a 2-minute walk brings you to Chochlidia Beach (pebbles, tamarisk shade, clear water) — ideal if you only have a short time before departure. Continue a few minutes further (via the steps east of the port) to the longer, quieter Vardia beach (pebbles and sand).

Insider Tips

  • Watch the tender schedule. This is a small-ship port with irregular service — confirm your last tender time with the ship and aim to be at the Karavostasis quay at least 1 hour early.
  • 💶
Bring cash (euros). The local bus, water taxis, and many small tavernas and cafes only accept cash. ATMs exist in Chora and at the port but queues form in peak season.
  • 🛵
Rent an ATV at the port. With limited taxis and a small bus network, renting an ATV or scooter is the most flexible way to reach distant beaches and Ano Meria. Book early in July–August.
  • 👟
Wear proper footwear. Chora's cobblestones are polished and uneven, and the Panagia path is gravel and stone. Skip flip-flops unless you're staying at the beach.
  • 🌬️
The Meltemi can whip up fast. July–August northern winds can make northern-facing beaches choppy. Choose Agali or Karavostasis Beach for calmer swimming on windy days.

Buses run between Karavostasi port, Chora, Agkali beach, and Ano Meria. Buses typically wait at the port when ferries arrive. Infrequent — check the schedule in advance.

🚗 Car / Scooter Rental

Several rental agencies in Chora offer cars, ATVs, and scooters. Good option for exploring beaches and the quieter northern village of Ano Meria independently.

🚤 Boat Trip to Beaches

€10–€20

Small boats run from the port to the secluded Katergo beach, and from Agkali to Agios Nikolaos / Livadaki. A scenic way to reach beaches inaccessible by road.
