Getting Ashore in Naxos

  • 1
Berth or tenderSmall cruise ships (Windstar, Seabourn, Silversea, etc.) tie up alongside the Chora port quay and you simply walk off onto the promenade. Larger ships anchor offshore and run tenders to the quay (5–10 min crossings). In July–August Meltemi winds can make tendering rough — check sea conditions.
  • 2
At the pierThe KTEL bus station and taxi stand are a 3-minute walk from the quay. The waterfront promenade begins immediately at the port.
  • 3
Getting aroundBeaches at Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are a €2 bus ride (15 min). Taxis are limited — book ahead if heading inland. Car/scooter rental available at the port for mountain village excursions.

💡 Pro move: No mega-ships call here — port size limits arrivals to small and mid-size vessels from lines like Windstar, Seabourn, Silversea, Azamara, Oceania, and Celestyal, which berth right at the Chora quay.

Insider Tips

  • Meltemi winds & tendering: July–August Meltemi winds (strong northerly gusts) can make tender crossings rough. Allow extra time for embarkation and watch the ship's announcements for tender delays.
  • 👟
Wear sturdy shoes: The marble causeway to the Portara is slippery, and the Kastro alleys are steep and cobbled. Comfortable non-slip footwear is essential.
  • 🚌
Bus to the beaches: The KTEL bus station is 3 minutes from the quay. Buses to Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka run every 15–30 min in summer for about €2. Much easier than a taxi.
  • 🧀
Buy real souvenirs: Naxos is Greece's larder. Take home vacuum-packed Graviera Naxou cheese, local honey, or a bottle of Kitron from the Vallindras shop in Chora — unique products found nowhere else.
  • 💶
Eat like a local: Prices are noticeably lower than Mykonos or Santorini. Order Naxian hand-cut fries, fresh grilled seafood on the promenade, or the traditional Kalogeros beef-and-eggplant stew.
