Insider Tips

  • 🚗
No rental vehicles. Halki has one taxi and one minibus. Walk to beaches and Chorio, or arrange the minibus/water taxi at the harbour for more distant spots.
  • 💶
Bring cash. There is only one ATM in Nimborio and it occasionally runs out. Cards work at most tavernas, but sunbeds, water taxis, and small kiosks want euros.
  • 🍝
Order the local pasta. Halkitika makaronia — hand-made pasta with caramelised onions and local mizithra cheese — is unique to this island and worth every euro.
  • ☀️
Shade is scarce. Halki is rocky and barren. Hat, sunscreen, and a full water bottle are essential for any walk, especially the Chorio hike in summer.
  • 🌍
Greece's first solar island. Halki generates its own electricity via a solar park and uses an electric municipal fleet — worth knowing if you want a conversation starter with locals.
