Getting Ashore

Kos Town has a dedicated cruise pier right next to the Castle of Neratzia — no tendering, no shuttle required for most visits.

Getting Ashore in Kos

  • 1
Walk off the pierShips dock at the Kos Town cruise pier in the main harbour. The Castle of the Knights is visible immediately to your left; the town center is a 5-minute flat walk along the waterfront.
  • 2
Rent a bicycleBike hire shops are clustered just outside the port gates. The island is famously flat with dedicated red bike lanes. Expect to pay €5-€10 for the day — the best €10 you'll spend in the Aegean.
  • 3
Take the tourist train or taxi for the AsklepieionThe Asklepieion is 4 km from the port. The green tourist train departs from the harbor roughly every 30 minutes (about €10 round-trip); taxis are also plentiful and cheap.
  • 4
Bus for distant beachesThe KTEL bus station is in central Kos Town, with services to Tigaki (11 km west) and Therma beach (12 km southeast). Fares are €1.60-€2.50 each way.

💡 Pro move: The pier can accommodate two medium-to-large ships simultaneously. Very large mega-ships (Oasis-class) may occasionally anchor and tender, but pier calls are by far the norm.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Most cruise lines dock at the dedicated cruise pier in Kos Town — you step off the gangway within sight of the medieval castle.

Insider Tips

  • 🚲
Rent a bike first. Bike shops are 2 minutes from the gangway. The island has proper dedicated lanes, it's pancake flat, and it's the single best way to see the coast and town on a cruise day.
  • 🏛
Combine the Asklepieion with Kos Town. The tourist train runs every 30 min from the harbor (€10 round-trip). Go early, then walk the ancient town ruins on your return.
  • ⚠️
Zia village sunsets are a trap for cruisers. Zia, the famous sunset village in the hills, is lovely — but ships depart before dusk. Visit during the day by taxi if you want the views, not the sunset.
  • 🍽️
Try the Turkish quarter of Platani. Just 2.5 km from the port, this small village has an 18th-century mosque and excellent Greek-Turkish fusion tavernas that most day-trippers skip.
  • 💶
Cash useful, not essential. Cards are accepted nearly everywhere in Kos Town. Carry €20-30 for buses, the tourist train, or market purchases.
