  • 2
Walk into MandrakiFrom the pier it's a flat 5-minute stroll along the waterfront into the village center and main square under the giant ficus trees.
  • 3
Getting to the VolcanoThe volcano caldera is a 20-min drive up winding mountain roads. Take your ship's shore excursion, hire one of the island's few taxis immediately on arrival, or rent a scooter/ATV near the port.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear closed-toe shoes in the crater. The ground is hot, uneven, and sulfurous — flip-flops or thin-soled shoes can melt or slip.
  • 🚕
Arrange transport the moment you land. The island has fewer than 10 taxis. If not on a tour, head straight to the taxi stand or scooter/ATV rental at the port.
  • 💶
Carry cash (euros). The crater ticket booth, village cafes, and local buses often only accept cash. Small notes help.
  • 🥛
Try soumada and pitia. Soumada is a sweet almond-rosewater drink unique to Nisyros — order it cold in the main square. Pitia are fried chickpea patties you'll find at most tavernas.
  • 🌬️
Sulfur fumes in the crater can be intense. If you have asthma or strong sensitivity to smells, consider viewing the caldera from the rim at Nikia village instead.
