Getting Ashore

Cruise ships arrive at Pigadia (Karpathos Town), the island's capital on the southeast coast. Small to mid-sized ships dock directly at the main pier; larger vessels anchor in the bay and run tenders.

Getting Ashore in Karpathos

  • 1
Docked shipsStep off the gangway onto the pier — you're a 2-5 minute flat walk from the harbor promenade, ATMs, car rental offices, and the town center.
  • 2
Tendered shipsTender boats land at the same harbor quay. Tender queues can build mid-day, so plan to return with buffer time before all-aboard.
  • 3
Getting aroundRent a car or ATV right at the port — highly recommended for Olympos, Apella, or Kyra Panagia. Taxis wait at the harbor (fixed rates: Amoopi ~€12-15, Olympos ~€50-60 one-way). Public buses exist but run infrequently and don't align with cruise schedules.

💡 Pro move: The Meltemi wind blows strongly in July and August. If it's breezy, choose sheltered Amoopi Beach over exposed northern beaches.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Karpathos is a working island port — small ships dock, large ships tender into the same Pigadia harbor quay.

Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Rent a car at the port. Rental offices are steps from the gangway. Without wheels, you're limited to Pigadia town and the beach — a car unlocks Olympos, Apella, and Kyra Panagia.
  • 💨
Meltemi wind in summer. July–August winds can be fierce on exposed beaches. If it's blowing, head to sheltered Amoopi Bay (15 min drive south) instead of northern beaches.
  • 🍝
Order makarounes. This handmade pasta with caramelized onions and local myzithra cheese is the island's signature dish — you won't find it anywhere else.
  • Olympos takes a half-day. Allow at least 1 hour each way plus 1-2 hours in the village. Don't attempt it if your port call is under 6 hours.
  • 💶
Bring some cash. Cards are accepted in Pigadia and Olympos, but small beach tavernas and local craft sellers often prefer euros.
