Getting Ashore

Rhodes is one of the easiest Greek island ports for cruisers — ships dock right at the edge of the medieval city, and you can walk to the Old Town gate in minutes.

From ship to UNESCO Old Town in under 10 minutes

  • 1
Commercial Port (Kolona) — where your ship docksLarge ships berth at the Commercial Port on the north end of the island, directly adjacent to the Old Town walls. The main gate, Freedom Gate (Pyli Eleftherias), is a 5-minute walk from the pier. No shuttle, no tender — just walk.
  • 2
Mandraki Harbour — smaller ships & scenic contextSome smaller cruise ships and yachts moor at Mandraki Harbour, immediately north of the Commercial Port. The three bronze deer statues mark where the Colossus of Rhodes reportedly stood. From here, the New Market and Old Town entrance are a 3-minute walk.
  • 3
Taxis & buses for LindosTaxis queue outside the port gate; a taxi to Lindos costs roughly €60–70 one-way (~50 km, 50 min). Public KTEL buses run hourly to Lindos from the East Side Bus Station on Averof Street, 10 min walk from the port — about €5 one-way. Shared taxi vans also available at the port.

💡 Pro move: The Old Town is entirely walkable from the port with no extra transport needed. For beaches, the closest is Elli Beach (10 min walk north); for Lindos, plan at least 3 hrs round-trip travel plus time on the ground.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Rhodes is a dock port — no tendering. Ships tie up at the Commercial Port, which sits directly beside the medieval Old Town walls.

Insider Tips

  • 🏰
The Old Town is completely walkable from port — no taxi, no bus, no cost to get there. The walls, streets, and Jewish Quarter are free. Budget entry fees for the Palace of Grand Masters (~€8) and Archaeological Museum (~€6).
  • ☀️
Rhodes is hot. July–August highs regularly hit 35°C (95°F). Lindos in particular gets brutal by noon — go early, carry water, and wear a hat.
  • 🚌
For Lindos, the KTEL bus is great value (~€5 one-way) but runs on a schedule — confirm return times before you board. Taxis are faster and more flexible at €60–70 per car each way.
  • 💶
Carry euros. The Old Town bazaar stalls and small cafés prefer cash. ATMs are plentiful just inside Freedom Gate near Symi Square.
  • 👟
Cobblestones everywhere. The polished marble lanes of Ippoton and the Lindos village stairs are stunning but slippery — skip sandals and flip-flops.
