Insider Tips

  • 🛂
Bring your passport. Albania is outside the EU/Schengen — your ship card alone won't get you through passport control. This applies whether you dock or tender.
  • 💶
Euros are king. Most taxis, restaurants, and shops accept euros directly. You'll receive change in Albanian Lek, which you likely can't use elsewhere — spend it or leave it.
  • 🚕
Fix the taxi fare first. Taxis are plentiful on the promenade but unmetered. Agree on a price before you get in: Butrint ~€25-30 return, Blue Eye ~€20-25 return, Ksamil ~€15-20 return.
  • 🏛️
Butrint is unmissable. If you have 5+ hours ashore, a taxi to Butrint National Park is the standout excursion — UNESCO ruins in a beautiful setting, easy to do independently.
  • 🍽️
Eat on the promenade. Sarande is exceptionally cheap by European standards — a full seafood lunch with wine runs €10-15 per person. Try grilled fish or byrek (flaky pastry) at any promenade restaurant.
