Insider Tips

  • 💶
Euros work everywhere. The Albanian Lek is official but euros are accepted in taxis, restaurants, and most shops. ATMs dispense Lek if you need local currency. Avoid exchanging at the terminal — city exchange offices give better rates.
  • 🚕
Agree taxi fares before you get in. No meters are used. Port to city center: €5-7; to Kaninë Castle or Radhime beach: €10-15 one way. Negotiate a wait-and-return price for out-of-town stops.
  • Tender timing matters. Collect a tender ticket early on port days; queues can build mid-morning. Note your last tender time — the Lungomare is just minutes from the landing, so returning is easy if you stay close.
  • 🌡️
Summer is hot and sunny. July-August temperatures easily hit 35 °C (95 °F). Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. The Lungomare has no shade for long stretches. Spring and autumn calls are far more comfortable for walking.
  • 🥐
Eat like a local — cheaply. A byrek (flaky phyllo pastry with cheese or spinach) from a street bakery costs under €1. A waterfront seafood lunch with wine runs €15-25 per person — excellent value by Mediterranean standards.
