  • 2
No shuttle neededThe town center, Krioneri Beach, and the old town are all within immediate walking distance of the tender dock.
  • 3
Valtos Beach by water taxiWater taxis run frequently from the pier to Valtos Beach (~€4–5 round trip, every 15–30 min). Skip the steep walk over the castle hill.

💡 Pro move: Cobblestones and steep steps make the old town and castle climb challenging for mobility-limited passengers — the flat harbor promenade and Krioneri Beach are fully accessible.

From Parga you can explore a medieval castle, a mythological river, a hilltop Ottoman fortress, and some of the Ionian coast's best beaches.

History

Venetian Castle of Parga

A free 10–15 min uphill walk rewards with sweeping panoramas over the bay, Valtos Beach, and the Panagia Islet. The castle has 11th-century origins but the surviving walls are largely Venetian (rebuilt in the 16th century) with later additions by Ali Pasha — the winged Lion of St. Mark still marks the gate. The pine-shaded path through stone arches is a highlight in itself.

Stunning limestone canyon, freezing crystal-clear water, and options for trekking or rafting through the gorge.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear real shoes. The cobblestones in Parga's old town and the castle steps are extremely slippery even when dry. Leave the flip-flops at the beach.
  • Take the water taxi to Valtos. It runs every 15–30 min from the pier for about €4–5 round trip — far better than the steep hill walk in summer heat.
  • 💶
Carry some cash. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants but cash is handy for water taxis, beach loungers, small kiosks, and the Little Red Train.
  • 🌡️
Summer heat is real. In July–August temperatures climb above 35°C. Tackle the castle early; retreat to the beach or a shaded taverna midday.
  • 🏊
Swim to Panagia Islet. From Krioneri Beach the tiny island with its whitewashed church is only about 100 m offshore — strong swimmers can make the crossing for a unique photo.
