Getting Ashore

Cruise ships dock at Ryotsu Port on Sado's east coast. Ryotsu is the island's main town — but the best sights require a bus, taxi, or tour.

Getting Ashore at Sado Island

  • 1
Disembark at Ryotsu PortShips dock directly at the pier. The ferry terminal building has a tourist information desk with English maps, free Wi-Fi, and a few souvenir shops.
  • 2
Explore Ryotsu on foot or head out by bus/taxiRyotsu town center (5-10 min walk) has sake breweries, a small covered market, and the Ryotsu Hot Spring waterfront. For the Gold Mine or Ogi, take a shuttle bus (cruise-line organized) or hire a taxi — allow 45-60 min each way.
  • 3
Book shore excursions ahead if possibleSado's public buses are infrequent. Your cruise line's organized tours are the most reliable way to reach Sado Kinzan Gold Mine, Toki Forest Park, or Ogi in a single day. Taxis at the pier are available but limited — negotiate a round-trip fare.
  • 4
Return with buffer timeThe island is large and mountainous. A loop combining Gold Mine + Ogi takes the full day. Build in at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

💡 Pro move: Cash is essential — many restaurants, rural shops, and local buses accept Japanese yen only. Withdraw at the Seven Bank ATM inside Ryotsu Ferry Terminal.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 💴
Bring cash in yen. ATMs accepting foreign cards are at the Seven Bank inside Ryotsu Ferry Terminal. Many rural restaurants, buses, and local shops are cash-only.
  • 🕒
The island is bigger than it looks. Ryotsu to the Gold Mine or Ogi is 45-60 minutes each way. Plan your day realistically and set a firm turnaround time.
  • 🚌
Public buses are infrequent. Cruise ship organized tours or pre-arranged taxis (negotiate a round-trip) are far more practical for independent explorers.
  • 🍣
Eat the sushi. Sado's waters produce exceptional yellowtail (buri), sweet nanban ebi shrimp, and oysters. Look for Sado-mae sushi restaurants near Ryotsu Port.
  • 🐦
Spot toki in the wild. Even outside Toki Forest Park, the rare crested ibis is sometimes seen wading in the rice paddies of the Niibo and Kuninaka plains on the drive across the island.
