Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Shuttle is essential. The port is 16 km from downtown — don't assume you can walk or that taxis will be plentiful. Confirm the ship's last shuttle time before you set out.
  • 💴
Carry yen cash. Temples, the Loople bus, and street food vendors are cash-only. ATMs inside 7-Eleven stores accept foreign cards reliably.
  • 🐂
Try gyutan. Sendai is famous for grilled beef tongue — a surprisingly delicious local specialty found in restaurants around the station and Ichibancho arcade.
  • Matsushima takes time. Allow at least 4 hours (40 min each way by train + 1–2 hrs at the bay). Miss the ship and you're in trouble — build in buffer.
  • 🌊
2011 Tsunami legacy. The coast near the port was devastated — massive seawalls are visible. Arahama Elementary School is preserved as a memorial; it's worth seeing if you're interested in recent history.

~¥240–¥420
