Insider Tips

  • 💴
Bring cash. Miyako is cash-first territory. Most small stalls, sappa boat operators, and local taxis are yen-only. The 7-Eleven near Miyako Station has a reliable international ATM.
  • 🚌
Use the port shuttle. The pier is 4 km from town — walking in heat or rain is miserable. The free or low-cost shuttle to Miyako Station is the smart move.
  • 🦔
Sea urchin season is May–August. If you're here in summer, the local fresh uni is exceptionally sweet — don't skip the bin-don.
  • 📱
Download Google Translate (Japanese offline). English is limited outside the port welcome desk. Locals are incredibly patient, but a translation app saves time.
  • 🌬️
Pack a windbreaker. The Sanriku Coast catches sea breezes — even in summer it can feel brisk on boat tours or exposed cliff walks.
