Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Book the Alpine Route early. Buses and cable cars have capacity limits — join a cruise-organised tour or pre-book online. Don't attempt it independently on a tight turnaround.
  • 💴
Carry cash yen. Many smaller restaurants, temples, and tram stops are cash-only. ATMs at 7-Eleven and Japan Post accept foreign cards.
  • 🕐
Leave the Alpine Route by 2 PM. The return journey (buses + cable car) takes 90+ minutes. Missing all-aboard at an industrial Japanese port is an expensive problem.
  • 🌡️
Dress in layers. Even in summer, upper Alpine Route elevations can be 10-15°C colder than the port. A light jacket is essential year-round.
  • 🚃
The city tram is excellent. Toyama's Portram and Centram lines are cheap, punctual, and cover all the main city sights — no taxi needed once in the centre.
