Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor in the Gulf of Porto Vecchio and tender passengers to the marina; a steep climb (or tourist train) leads up to the Citadel.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to the marinaMedium and large ships anchor offshore; tenders run approximately every 20-30 min to Port de Plaisance (the marina). Journey takes 10-15 min.
  • 2
Reach the Old TownFrom the marina, the Citadel is about 1 km uphill — a 15-20 min walk with some very steep, cobbled sections. The Petit Train (tourist train) runs from the port to the old town for ~€7-8 round trip.
  • 3
Get to the beachesPalombaggia, Santa Giulia and other top beaches are 15-30 min by taxi or rental car. Summer beach shuttles (Navette des Plages) occasionally run from the port — check at the Tourist Office on arrival.

💡 Pro move: Wear sturdy shoes — the Citadel's cobblestone lanes are steep and slippery.

Insider Tips

  • Tender timing matters. Tenders back to the ship can queue late afternoon — return by your ship's posted last-tender time or you risk missing the boat, literally.
  • 👟
Skip the flip-flops. The Citadel's cobblestone lanes are steep, uneven and slippery. Wear proper walking shoes.
  • 🏖️
Beaches need wheels. Palombaggia and Santa Giulia are the highlights of a Porto Vecchio visit but neither is walkable from the port — budget for a taxi (€25-40 each way) or book a beach excursion.
  • 🍖
Eat Corsican. Try Prisuttu (cured ham), Brocciu cheese dishes, and local Pietra chestnut beer — you won't find these anywhere else.
  • 🕐
Afternoon siesta. Many Citadel boutiques close 1:00-4:00 PM, especially in shoulder season. Plan shopping for morning or evening.
