Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the marina at the base of the citadel cliffs.

Getting Ashore in Bonifacio

  • 1
Tender to the marinaShip tenders land at Quai Sotta Portigliola in the lower marina. The dock is right at the foot of the cliffs with restaurants and shops immediately at hand.
  • 2
Climb to the Citadel (Haute Ville)A steep 0.8–1 km path with stairs leads from the marina up to the Old Town gate — allow 20–25 minutes. Wear sturdy shoes; cobblestones are uneven.
  • 3
Or take Le Petit TrainThe tourist train runs regularly between the marina and the citadel entrance, ideal if the climb isn't for you (small fee).
  • 4
Book boat tours earlyCliff and sea-cave tours depart from the marina throughout the day; popular trips to the Lavezzi Islands fill up fast in summer — book online or at the quay first thing.

💡 Pro move: Small expedition ships and yachts sometimes dock directly in the marina, skipping the tender. Check your ship's daily program.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. The citadel streets are steep, cobblestoned, and often slippery. Sandals or flip-flops will make you miserable.
  • 🚤
Book boat tours early. Cliff and Lavezzi Islands tours fill up fast in summer. Head to the marina kiosks as soon as you tender, or book in advance online.
  • 🌬️
Wind can cancel tenders. The Strait of Bonifacio is notoriously windy — the Mistral and Tramontane can kick up quickly. Check your ship's announcements for tender status.
  • 🚂
Petit Train is worth it. If the climb looks daunting, Le Petit Train makes the citadel accessible to everyone for a few euros — it departs from near the marina.
  • 🍽️
Eat in the Haute Ville. The marina restaurants are convenient but pricier and more touristy. Climb up and find a table in the citadel streets for better food at fairer prices.
