Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Bring insect repellent. The Danube Delta is a wetland — mosquitoes are fierce near the water, especially at dusk. Pack DEET-based spray for any Delta boat tour.
  • 💶
Use Romanian Leu (RON). Vendors near the ship may take Euros but at poor rates. ATMs are available in Civic Square. Credit cards accepted at most restaurants and museums.
  • 🐟
Order the storceag. This creamy sturgeon and sour-cream soup is Tulcea's signature dish. Ivan Pescar on the promenade makes one of the best versions — don't leave without trying it.
  • 🚤
Book your Delta boat tour early. Operators line the promenade, but slots on smaller boats fill quickly when multiple ships are in port. Check with your cruise director or approach operators the evening before if possible.
  • 👟
Wear sturdy shoes for Monument Hill. The climb is steep and paved with cobblestones. Sandals or slippery-soled shoes make for a tough ascent.
