Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring cash RON. Local boatmen, the Trokarici tractor-bus, most restaurants, and craft sellers are cash-only. The single ATM in the village runs out regularly — exchange before you arrive.
  • 🦟
Mosquito repellent is non-negotiable. This is a wetland — dusk and dawn bring thick clouds of mosquitoes. Bring DEET-strength repellent from the ship.
  • 👟
Wear flat, sand-friendly footwear. Every 'street' in the village is deep, loose sand. Heels, dress shoes, and wheels (wheelchairs, strollers) struggle badly — pack sandals or light trainers you can fill with sand.
  • 🍲
Eat the storciag. This creamy Lipovan sturgeon soup is the signature dish of the entire Danube Delta and almost impossible to find elsewhere. Any local guesthouse courtyard serving 'prânz pescăresc' (fisherman's lunch) will have it.
  • 🐴
Walk to the beach for the wild horses. Feral horses roam the dunes freely — spotting them at the water's edge is one of the most memorable sights in the Black Sea region. Mornings are best.
