Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring pesos. Topolobampo is not a tourist-polished port — many taxi drivers, boat captains, and palapa restaurants only accept Mexican pesos. Exchange before sailing or withdraw from an ATM in Los Mochis.
  • 🐬
El Pechocho is real. The famous friendly dolphin has lived in the bay for decades. A panga tour from the Malecón gives you the best chance to see him up close — negotiate the price before you board.
  • 🚂
Copper Canyon logistics: You cannot ride the full El Chepe train in one port day. Cruise excursions use coaches to El Fuerte then a scenic canyon segment. Book through your cruise line early — these sell out.
  • 🌡️
Hot and sunny: Topolobampo has a desert coastal climate. Summer calls (May–Oct) can be brutally hot and humid. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. November–April is ideal weather.
  • 🐟
Eat local: Sinaloa is Mexico's seafood capital. Aguachile and pescado zarandeado at Playa El Maviri are worth skipping the ship's buffet for. Do not miss lunch ashore.
