An authentic Sinaloan port on the Sea of Cortez — gateway to the world's greatest canyon train journey, wild dolphins, and some of the best seafood in Mexico.
Ships dock at Topolobampo's commercial pier — a mandatory shuttle takes you to the Malecón in minutes.
💡 Pro move: Pesos are strongly preferred. Many local taxis, boat captains, and small restaurants do not accept US dollars or credit cards. Exchange money before sailing or withdraw at an ATM in Los Mochis.
Topolobampo is a docked port — all ships tie up at the commercial deep-water pier.

From Copper Canyon rail adventures to dolphin boat tours and beachfront seafood, Topolobampo punches well above its size.
The Barrancas del Cobre system is four times larger than the Grand Canyon. Cruise excursions typically take you inland to El Fuerte by coach, then board the famous Chihuahua al Pacífico railway for a scenic canyon-rim journey. A full through-trip is impossible on a day call — the rim excursion is the go.
Find Copper Canyon tours →Hire a local panga (small motorboat) at the Malecón to explore the mangrove-lined bay. Look for El Pechocho — a famous solitary bottlenose dolphin who loves human interaction — plus frigatebirds, pelicans, and a seabird rookery on Isla de Patos.
Find bay boat tours →A long sandy barrier island 15–20 minutes by taxi from the port. Calm, shallow waters of the Sea of Cortez and a strip of palapa seafood restaurants serving some of the freshest fish you'll ever eat. The house specialty: pescado zarandeado grilled over charcoal.
Find El Maviri beach tours →About 90 minutes inland, El Fuerte is a beautifully preserved colonial town and the reputed birthplace of Zorro lore. Cobblestone streets, a 17th-century fort, and a tranquil plaza make it one of the most charming small towns in Mexico.
Find El Fuerte tours →A rocky island about 15 km offshore, home to a lively sea lion colony and bird rookery. Best visited October through April. Requires a dedicated boat trip — often bookable through local operators at the Malecón.
Find sea lion island tours →The regional city 25–35 minutes inland. Visit the Jardín Botánico Benjamín Francis Johnston — originally the private garden of an American sugar baron — and the Museo Regional del Valle del Fuerte for indigenous Mayo history.
Find Los Mochis tours →Topolobampo's Malecón is the heart of the walkable area — compact but scenic, with great bay views.
Walk the renovated waterfront promenade for bay views and the colorful 'Topolobampo' sign, then climb the steps to the Mirador de la Virgen for panoramic views over the bay, port, and Sierra Madre foothills. Great for photos before heading out on a longer excursion.
🗺️ See full route in Maps →Taxi to El Maviri beach, then walk the sandy strip past the row of palapa restaurants. Pick the busiest one, order aguachile or pescado zarandeado, and watch the fishing boats. The shallow, calm water is ideal for a swim. Taxi back to port.
