Getting Ashore

Loreto is a tender port — ships anchor offshore and run shuttle boats to the municipal pier at the north end of the Malecón.

Tendering to the Malecón

  • 1
Collect a tender ticketOn busy days the ship issues numbered tender tickets. If you booked a ship excursion you typically go first; independent passengers board as called.
  • 2
Tender ride (~10 min)Tenders land at the Dársena de Loreto, right at the start of the Malecón boardwalk. The town center is 400 m straight ahead.
  • 3
Walk to the plazaStroll south along Calle Salvatierra — a shaded pedestrian street — 5 minutes to Plaza Juárez and the Mission.
  • 4
Check tender return timesThe last tender is often 30–60 min before all-aboard. Note the published time; missing the last tender means a water-taxi or missing the ship.

💡 Pro move: Rough seas can cause the cruise line to cancel tendering entirely — always have a sea-day backup plan when booking independent excursions.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There is no cruise pier — all ships anchor and tender passengers to the town's small marina.

Insider Tips

  • Tender risk is real. Loreto can be skipped if seas are rough. Book independent excursions only with operators who refund if the ship cannot tender.
  • 💵
Cash is king. USD accepted almost everywhere, but pesos get you better prices. ATMs near Plaza Juárez; bring small bills for pangas and street food.
  • 🐠
Book Coronado early. Panga captains at the marina offer independent island tours ($40–60 USD/person). Go straight there on arrival — spots fill up fast on ship days.
  • 🏙️
No high-rises, no hard sell. A local ordinance limits buildings to 3 stories, keeping the colonial skyline intact. Vendors are relaxed — a polite 'No gracias' is respected.
  • 🌡️
Hot and sunny. Loreto averages 300+ sunny days a year. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water — shade is limited on the Malecón walk.

🚶 Walk

Free

🚕 Taxi

105–120 MXN (~$6–7 USD) within town

Local taxis are plentiful around the marina, plaza, and hotel zone. Agree on the fare before you depart; drivers sometimes quote higher rates in USD. If your ship anchors at Puerto Escondido (~26 km south), expect ~260 MXN (~$14–15 USD) to reach the city center.

🏙️ Guided city tour

~$30 USD per person

Local operators such as Loreto Sea and Land Tours run 2.5-hour guided van tours of the city and its missions (~$30 USD/person for small groups, 900 MXN/person otherwise). A minimum of four passengers is typically required.

🚗 Car rental
