Getting from Ship to Shore

  • 1
Pier to downtown shuttleMany cruise lines run a complimentary or low-cost shuttle from the pier gate to Plaza de los Tres Presidentes in the heart of Guaymas (~10 min). Check with your cruise director at embarkation.
  • 2
Taxis at the gateLocal taxis wait outside the port gate. Agree on a fare before getting in — about $5–8 USD to downtown Guaymas, $20–25 USD each way to San Carlos.
  • 3
Local buses to San CarlosGreen-and-white buses run between downtown Guaymas and San Carlos for under $1 USD — an adventure for budget travelers. Board near the main market.

💡 Pro move: Do not attempt to walk from the pier to the city center — it's 1.5–2 miles through an active industrial port, and pedestrian access is restricted.

Insider Tips

  • 🦐
Order the shrimp. Guaymas is the shrimp capital of northern Mexico — camarones al mojo de ajo (garlic butter) or the classic coctel de camarón at any Malecón marisquería will be the best shrimp of your life.
  • 💵
Bring pesos. Downtown Guaymas vendors and taxis strongly prefer Mexican pesos. USD is accepted in San Carlos resort areas but at poor rates. ATMs are available near the main plaza.
  • 🚖
Agree on taxi fares first. Taxis don't use meters — settle the price before you get in. Downtown Guaymas ~$5–8 USD; Playa Miramar ~$5 USD; San Carlos ~$20–25 USD each way.
  • 🕐
Budget your time for San Carlos. The scenic drive is worth it, but round-trip taxi plus beach/Mirador time eats 4–5 hours. Do San Carlos OR a deep dive into Guaymas — not both.
  • 🌡️
It gets hot. Summer calls can see 100°F+ with high humidity. Wear light clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. The Malecón has shade palms; the pearl farm is shaded too.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, DiDiUber confirmed active in Heroica Guaymas. DiDi launched March 2024. Both available via app.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚕 Taxi

$10–$15 USD one-way

Taxis wait at the port and are the most common way to reach downtown Guaymas, about a 10-minute drive. Always negotiate fare before departure — meters are rarely used.

📱 Uber / DiDi

$5–$10 USD

Both Uber and DiDi are confirmed active in Guaymas. App-based rides offer fixed pricing and are a convenient alternative to street taxis.

🚌 Public Bus

5–12 MXN (~$0.30–$0.75 USD)

Local city buses run through Guaymas at very low cost but routes are not tourist-focused and can be confusing. Best for budget travelers willing to navigate local transit.

🚐 Shore Excursion Shuttle

Varies by cruise line

Many cruise lines offer shuttle transfers to downtown Guaymas or San Carlos. A convenient option if you prefer not to arrange your own transport from this industrial port.

🚗 Rental Car

$40–$80 USD/day

A car gives flexibility to explore both Guaymas and nearby San Carlos beach resort. Rental agencies are available in town, though not always at the port itself.
