Insider Tips

  • 💴
Carry yen cash. Ferry ticket machines, island buses, and most small cafes on Naoshima and Teshima are cash-only. The convenience store ATM at Uno Station accepts foreign cards.
  • 🎫
Pre-book Chichu Art Museum tickets. Naoshima's underground museum requires timed-entry tickets purchased online in advance — walk-ups are almost always turned away.
  • Watch the ferry schedule. Build in at least 90 minutes before all-aboard when planning Naoshima. Ferries are punctual; missing the last one back means a longer route via Okayama.
  • 🚲
Rent a bike on Naoshima. Electric bicycles available at the island ferry port are the best way to connect the art museums. Reserve in advance — they sell out quickly on cruise days.
  • 🍽️
Try Tamano Ontama Meshi. The local specialty is fried rice with conger eel (anago) and a soft-boiled onsen egg — look for it at eateries near Uno Station.
