Insider Tips

  • 💴
Cash only in most of the village. Temples, the Sensuijima ferry, small noodle shops, and the Homeishu tasting shop only accept JPY. Carry 5,000–10,000 JPY in small bills.
  • Shops open late and close early. Most attractions and cafes open 9–10 AM and shut by 4:30–5 PM. Plan your touring for the middle of the day.
  • 👟
Wear slip-on shoes. Temples require removing footwear; cobblestone alleys are uneven. Comfortable walking shoes with easy removal are ideal.
  • 🍶
Try Homeishu — a 17th-century medicinal rice liqueur brewed only here from 16 herbs. Free tastings at Okamoto Homeishu shop near the harbor.
  • 🎬
Ghibli fans: Hayao Miyazaki lived here while creating Ponyo (2008). The harbor, cliffs, and old houses you see were his direct inspiration. Several cafes sell Ponyo-themed treats.
