Getting Ashore

All ships tender to Porto di Scari on the island's northeast coast — there is no pier for large vessels.

Getting Ashore at Stromboli

  • 1
Tender to Porto di ScariShips anchor offshore and run tender boats to the small pier at Scari. Allow 15–20 minutes for the tender ride. Queues can build mid-morning — go early or late.
  • 2
Walk or take an Ape taxiThe town center (Piazza San Vincenzo) is a 10–15 minute uphill walk on paved lanes. Alternatively, electric three-wheeled Ape taxis wait at the pier and charge around €5–10 per person to the town.
  • 3
No rental cars — island rulePrivate cars are banned for visitors. Getting around means walking, hiring a local boat, or catching an Ape taxi. The island is small enough to explore entirely on foot.

💡 Pro move: Note the all-aboard time carefully. Return to the pier at least 45 minutes early to allow for the walk down and tender queues.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. Stromboli is steep with cobblestone lanes and volcanic sand. Sandals work for the beach, but sneakers or hiking shoes are best for the town and any volcano trail.
  • 💶
Bring cash. Many small shops, cafes, and Ape taxi drivers are cash-only. There is only one ATM on the island near the post office, and it frequently runs empty during busy port days.
  • Allow 45 min to re-board. Walk back to Porto di Scari and factor in tender queues. Missing the last tender is not an option — plan your time accordingly.
  • 🌋
Above 290 m requires a licensed guide. Independent hiking above this level is illegal and dangerous. Book an authorized volcanologist guide in advance — spots fill quickly on port days.
  • 🏖️
Black sand = extreme heat. Volcanic sand absorbs heat fast. Wear water shoes or sandals on the beach, and bring plenty of water and high-SPF sunscreen.
