Insider Tips

  • 🍦
Don't skip Gelateria Cesare. The tiny green kiosk at the start of the Lungomare near the museum is legendary. Order the bergamot flavor — it grows only here.
  • 🚂
Scilla is worth it if you have 7+ hours. Direct trains from Reggio Calabria Lido (the seafront station nearest the port and museum) run roughly hourly, take about 20-30 min, and cost ~€3. Confirm last return time before you go.
  • Siesta is real. Shops and small restaurants close 1:30–4:30 PM. The National Museum and the Lungomare stay lively. Plan your lunch before 1:30 PM.
  • 🌫
Watch for the Fata Morgana. In the right atmospheric conditions, a rare mirage makes Sicily appear to float above the Strait. Best seen from the Lungomare in calm, hazy weather.
  • 🗣️
English is limited here. Reggio Calabria is off the main tourist trail. A translation app and a few Italian phrases (per favore, grazie, quanto costa?) will go a long way.
