Getting Ashore

Cruise ships anchor in St Mary's Roads and tender passengers to St Mary's Quay in Hugh Town — the island's only town is right at the pier.

Getting Ashore at St Mary's

  • 1
Tender to St Mary's QuayShips anchor in the sheltered channel between St Mary's and Samson. Ship's tenders or local catamarans ferry passengers to St Mary's Quay. Tendering is weather-dependent — Atlantic swells can cancel a call.
  • 2
Hugh Town is immediateStep off the pier and you are in Hugh Town within 2 minutes. The main street, shops, pubs, and beaches are all within a short walk.
  • 3
Island-hopping via tripper boatsThe Association of Scilly Watermen runs inter-island boats departing from the quay to Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes, and Bryher. Check the blackboards on the pier for same-day schedules and allow ample return time.

💡 Pro move: Mobility note: tendering involves boarding small boats and climbing gangways — passengers with limited mobility should confirm feasibility with the ship before booking.

Insider Tips

  • ⚠️
Tendering is weather-dependent. Atlantic swells can prevent tendering entirely — the ship may skip St Mary's with little notice. Have a backup plan and don't book non-refundable inter-island tours in advance.
  • Mind the tripper boat times if you visit Tresco or another off-island. Post departure times are on blackboards at the quay. Missing the last boat back means missing your ship.
  • 🚲
Book golf carts (Scilly Carts) well in advance — they sell out weeks ahead. Bikes from St Mary's Bike Hire are usually available on the day and are the best way to see the whole island quickly.
  • 💷
Cards accepted everywhere in Hugh Town shops, pubs, and cafés. Bring a few coins for roadside honesty boxes selling flowers, fudge, and crafts — a lovely Scillonian tradition.
  • 🌤
Dress in layers. Scilly's microclimate means warm sunshine can give way to Atlantic wind in minutes. A windproof layer is essential even in summer.
