Getting Ashore

St Agnes is a tender-only port; all cruise passengers come ashore by small boat.

Getting Ashore at St Agnes

  • 1
Expedition / small shipsShips anchor off Porth Conger and tender passengers directly to the stone quay. Check ship announcements for tender ticket times.
  • 2
Larger cruise ships (via St Mary's)Most standard-size ships anchor off St Mary's (Hugh Town). Tender to St Mary's, then catch an inter-island tripper boat to St Agnes — a scenic 15–20-minute crossing run by St Agnes Boating.
  • 3
On the islandNo cars, buses, or taxis exist. Everything is on foot via gravel tracks, sandy paths, and clifftop trails. Terrain is mostly gentle but uneven — wear sturdy shoes.

💡 Pro move: Return tender times are strict on small islands. Note your ship's all-aboard time and build a buffer — the inter-island boat schedule doesn't bend for cruise ships.

Insider Tips

  • ⚠️
Tide warning for Gugh: The sandbar to Gugh is submerged at high tide for several hours. Check the tide board at the quay or pub before crossing — being stranded means missing your tender.
  • 🍺
The Turk's Head fills fast: Britain's most southwesterly pub is tiny and gets packed the moment tenders land. Go early or late in your visit — the crab sandwiches and local ales are worth timing strategically.
  • 💷
Bring cash: Card machines work at the pub and Troytown Farm, but the many honesty stalls scattered across the island are cash-only. A handful of pound coins goes a long way.
  • 🧥
Layer up: Atlantic weather shifts fast even in summer. A windproof layer is essential — it can be glorious sun at the quay and a horizontal gusts on the western coast 20 minutes later.
  • 👟
Footwear matters: The island has no paved roads — gravel tracks, sandy clifftop paths, and rocky cove scrambles. Sturdy trainers or walking shoes are far preferable to sandals.
