Insider Tips

  • Loreley is the priority. Allow at least 2 hrs for the plateau — taxi up (€8–10), walk back down the staircase to maximise time.
  • Don't skip the St. Goar ferry. Rheinfels Castle (€5 entry) is the best Rhine castle ruin and only ~10 min by ferry from the pier.
  • 💶
Cash is useful. Many small cafés and the ferry crossing prefer euros in cash; card acceptance is variable in village shops.
  • 🌧
Weather can close the plateau. Low cloud or heavy rain obscures the Loreley views — have a backup plan (old town, castle ruin) if conditions are poor.
  • 🍷
Try the local Riesling. The steep Rhine-facing vineyards around here produce excellent dry Riesling — wine bars along the promenade are the easiest spot for a glass.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ UberUber operates in the region but availability in this small town may be limited. Expect longer wait times than in a city.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walking

Free

Ships dock right in the heart of Sankt Goarshausen. The town is very small — the waterfront, Loreley visitor center, and main street are all within easy walking distance of the pier.

⛴️ Rhine Ferry to St. Goar

~€2.70 per adult (one way)

The FRS Loreley car ferry crosses the Rhine to St. Goar in about 10 minutes. Runs regularly; a great option to explore both sides of the river.

🚌 Regional Bus (VRM)

~€2–5

VRM bus line 535 connects Sankt Goarshausen to the Loreley plateau and surrounding towns. Purchase tickets from the driver or VRM app.

🚕 Taxi

~€10–20 within region

Local taxis (e.g., Simone Taxi Fluck) serve the area. Useful for reaching towns not on bus routes. Arrange at the pier or call ahead.

📱 Uber

Varies (metered)

Uber is listed as available in Sankt Goarshausen via the app, but the town is very small — availability and wait times may be inconsistent. Best as a backup option.
