The 'Town of Towers' along the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Sixteen medieval watchtowers, a strikingly intact town wall you can walk, and a Gothic red church — all in a town most Rhine cruisers have to themselves.
Ships dock at floating pontoon piers along the Rhine Promenade — step ashore and walk straight into town.
💡 Pro move: Viking River Cruises, A-ROSA, and KD Line all dock here. The KD landing stage near the Marktplatz has accessibility ramps.
Oberwesel has multiple floating pontoon stages along the Rhine embankment — all close to town.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |

Oberwesel rewards independent exploration — the town wall loop and a castle visit fill most of a shore day nicely.
Oberwesel's 3.5 km town wall is the best-preserved in the Middle Rhine, with 16 of the original 22 towers still standing. Walk the rampart tops for rooftop and vineyard views — entirely free.
Explore the town wall →A 1,000-year-old hilltop castle now partly a hotel, with a small tower museum (≈€5–6) detailing castle history and unbeatable panoramic Rhine views. Steep 30–45 min climb or pre-arranged taxi.
Find castle tours →A striking Gothic church clad in terracotta-red stone — rare in Germany. Inside: the Goldene Altar, one of Germany's oldest altarpieces, and 14th-century rood screens. Free entry.
Book a guided church tour →The valley's steep-slope Rieslings are world-class and little-known outside Germany. Book a tasting at Weingut Lanius-Knab or Weingut Hoffmann for dry Trocken to sweet Spätlese pours with local charcuterie.
Book a Rhine wine tasting →A white Gothic fortified church set higher on the hill with quiet views over the Rhine valley. Less visited than the Red Church — worth the short climb for the calm and the vistas.
Explore Oberwesel churches →The town is compact and most highlights are walkable from the pier in under 15 minutes.
Start at the Rhine Promenade pier, cross the railway, and head to the Ochsenturm (Ox Tower) near the river. Follow the wall north, climbing to the rampart walkway for rooftop views, then loop back through the Marktplatz. Finish at Liebfrauenkirche.
From the Marktplatz, follow signage uphill on cobblestone paths through vineyards to Schönburg Castle. Allow 30–45 min each way. Wear sturdy shoes — it's steep. Not recommended for limited mobility.
