Getting Ashore

Samos has two cruise ports — confirm your itinerary before planning your day.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Vathy (Samos Town) — Pier PortMost ships dock at the Old Passenger Pier (steps from the town square) or the Malagari commercial pier (~1.2 km north). If at Malagari, it's a flat 15-minute walk along the waterfront road or a short taxi ride into town.
  • 2
Pythagorion — Tender PortShips anchor offshore and tender passengers into the horseshoe harbor. You step off the tender directly onto the pedestrianized promenade, surrounded by tavernas and shops.
  • 3
Getting AroundTaxis are limited island-wide. For exploring beyond your port town — wine museum, Heraion, mountain villages — rent a car or scooter at the pier or book a ship excursion. Local buses exist but run infrequently.

💡 Pro move: Samos is a large island; many highlights are spread out. A rental car unlocks the best beaches and inland villages in a half-day.

Insider Tips

  • 🗺️
Two ports, one island: Vathy and Pythagorion are ~12 km apart. Your itinerary will list one — plan accordingly. Don't assume you're near the other port's attractions.
  • 🚗
Rent a car for the most flexibility: Taxis are scarce and expensive for island-wide travel. Car rentals at the pier start around €35-45/day and let you cover beaches, wineries, and ruins in a half-day.
  • 🍷
Buy a bottle of Samos Muscat: Sweet Samos wines (Nectar, Vin Doux) are world-class, affordable, and not widely exported. Even one bottle from a local shop is a genuine taste of the island.
  • 🏺
Pythagorean Cup souvenir: These clever ceramic cups with a hidden siphon — overfill them and the contents drain out the bottom — are the quintessential Samos gift. €5-€15 at any gift shop; fun and genuinely local.
  • 🕑
Afternoon siesta: Local shops in Vathy may close 2:00–5:30 PM. Do your shopping in the morning or early afternoon; tourist areas and restaurants stay open all day.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisNo major rideshare apps (Uber, Bolt, Lyft) operate on Samos. Local taxis are the primary on-demand option; Aegean Taxi app covers Greek islands.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walk

Free

Cruise ships dock in Vathy (Samos Town), and the town center is easily walkable from the port in 5–10 minutes. Most waterfront restaurants, shops, and the main square are close by.

🚕 Taxi

€5–€15

Regulated metered taxis with a base fare of ~€2.90 plus ~€1.80/km. Short rides within Vathy are cheap; longer trips to beach towns like Kokkari or Pythagorion run €12–€20.

🚌 Local Bus (KTEL)

€2–€5

KTEL buses connect Vathy with major island towns including Pythagorion, Karlovasi, and Kokkari. Infrequent schedules — check timetables at the bus station near the port.

🚗 Rental Car / Scooter

€35–€60/day

Multiple rental agencies are available near the port and in Vathy. Best way to explore the island at your own pace; roads are generally good and traffic is light outside town.

🚌 Guided Island Bus Tour

€70–€80/person

Full-day guided bus tours (~8 hours) cover highlights like the Temple of Hera, mountain villages, and wineries. Convenient option for cruise passengers wanting structured sightseeing.
