Insider Tips

  • 💴
Carry cash in JPY. This rural region has limited card acceptance — food stalls, temples, and smaller shops are cash-only. ATMs at Japan Post offices accept foreign cards.
  • 🚌
Free shuttle from Takenouchi Berth to Sakaiminato Station is almost always provided on cruise days. Confirm at the gangway before walking — it's a long 6 km haul in the heat.
  • 🏯
Foreign passport = discounts. Shimane Prefecture welcomes international visitors: Matsue Castle, the Lafcadio Hearn Museum, and several sites offer 30-50% discounts when you show your foreign passport or cruise ship ID.
  • Matsue is worth it, but budget the time. Allow at least 1.5 hours each way from the port. If your call is 6 hours or less, take a ship excursion — DIY risks missing departure.
  • 🗣️
English is limited here. Download Google Translate with offline Japanese. Port volunteers at Sakaiminato are friendly and often speak enough English to help with directions.
