Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the commercial Port of Safi; a free shuttle transfers passengers to the port exit gate, putting you at the edge of the medina.

Getting Ashore in Safi

  • 1
Shuttle to Port GateThe working port does not allow pedestrian transit. Your cruise line (or port authority) provides a free shuttle from the gangway to the port exit gate — typically a 5-minute ride.
  • 2
On Foot into the MedinaFrom the port gate you're steps from the Medina entrance and the Château de la Mer. Most main sights are within a 20-minute walk.
  • 3
Petit TaxisBeige/yellow small taxis wait at the port exit. They're metered and cheap (under 15 MAD / ~$1.50 USD city-wide). Always ask the driver to start the meter ('compteur').
  • 4
Grand Taxis for Beaches or Day TripsLarge Mercedes taxis (shared or private) cover longer distances — e.g., Lalla Fatna Beach (~15 km north) or excursions to Essaouira (2 hrs) or Marrakech (2.5 hrs). Agree on a flat rate before boarding.

💡 Pro move: ATMs are available near the Medina. Bring cash — most shops, taxis, and street food stalls are cash-only.

Culture

Potters' Hill & Ceramics Quarter

Colline des Potiers is Safi's most famous attraction — dozens of working pottery studios line the lanes where artisans shape clay on foot-powered wheels, apply intricate cobalt and terracotta designs, and fire pieces in traditional wood-burning kilns. You can watch the whole process for free and shop direct from the makers.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring Moroccan Dirhams (MAD). ATMs are in the medina, but souks, taxis, and street food are strictly cash. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside larger restaurants.
  • 🚌
Don't miss the port shuttle. You cannot walk through the working commercial port — the free shuttle to the gate is mandatory. Check your gangway for departure times.
  • 🏺
Pottery bargaining is expected. At Potters' Hill and the medina shops, start at roughly 50% of the asking price and work up. Prices are negotiable — don't pay the first number quoted.
  • 👗
Dress conservatively. Safi is a traditional city. Keep shoulders and knees covered, especially in the medina and near mosques. This earns genuine respect from locals.
  • 🐟
Eat the sardines. This is one of the world's biggest sardine ports — they're impossibly fresh. The medina's fish souk (buy + grill combo for a few dirhams) is the real experience.
