Getting Ashore

A new multipurpose pier (Muelle Multipropósito de Puerto Williams, at Punta Lagunilla) now handles most expedition ships; larger vessels may still anchor and tender.

Getting Ashore in Puerto Williams

  • 1
Clear Chilean customs & biosecurity (SAG)Chile's agricultural biosecurity is strictly enforced. Do not carry fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, or open food off the ship — sniffer dogs often work the pier and fines are heavy.
  • 2
Walk or taxi to townThe pier is roughly 1 km from the town centre along a flat waterfront road. Taxis wait dockside; a ride to anywhere in town costs a few hundred pesos.
  • 3
Get cash earlyThere is one Banco de Chile ATM in town and it regularly runs dry. Draw cash on arrival if you plan to buy souvenirs or pay small vendors.
  • 4
Check weather before hikesPatagonian weather can shift from sunny to sleet in minutes. Confirm conditions with ship staff before heading to Cerro Bandera or Omora Park.

💡 Pro move: Phase 2 of the new pier (capacity to 240m ships) began construction November 2025 and is ongoing — some disruption possible at the dock area.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Puerto Williams' new pier handles expedition and luxury ships; a second construction phase is underway to extend capacity to vessels up to 240 m.

Insider Tips

  • 🌬️
Dress for four seasons in one day. Even in austral summer (Dec–Mar) temperatures rarely top 13°C (55°F). Bring a windproof/waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer, a beanie, and gloves — every day, no exceptions.
  • 🐕
SAG biosecurity is serious. Do not carry fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, meat, or open food off the ship. Sniffer dogs routinely work the pier and customs area, and fines are substantial.
  • 💵
Get cash at the first ATM you see. There is only one Banco de Chile ATM in town and it regularly runs out of notes. Credit cards work at main restaurants and the museum, but smaller vendors and taxis are cash-only.
  • 🦀
Order the centolla. Southern king crab pulled fresh from the Beagle Channel is the definitive Puerto Williams meal. Don't leave without a chupe de centolla or empanadas de centolla.
  • 🏗️
Pier construction is active. Phase 2 of the new dock (for ships up to 240 m) began in November 2025 and continues. Expect some dock-area activity; confirm berthing arrangements with your ship.
