Getting Ashore

Whether you dock or tender, you arrive right at the mouth of the historic center — no shuttle needed.

Getting Ashore in Portoferraio

  • 1
Pier or tender?Smaller and mid-size cruise ships typically dock at the Alto Fondale pier or Calata Italia, steps from the town gate. Larger ships anchor in the bay and run tenders to the Darsena Medicea landing — a well-organized drop-off inside the Medici harbor wall.
  • 2
From the jetty to townBoth the pier and tender landing put you within a 2-minute flat walk of Porta del Mare, the main gate into the historic center. The harbor promenade (Calata Mazzini) begins immediately.
  • 3
Getting around the islandTaxis queue at the port exit but are limited — book early or pre-arrange. Local ATL buses serve the island but schedules are thin. For Porto Azzurro, Capoliveri, or Sansone beach, a shore excursion or private driver is the easiest option.

💡 Pro move: The historic center is steep: cobblestone steps lead up to the forts and Napoleon's villa. Mobility-limited passengers should stick to the flat harbor promenade and Ghiaie beach.

Insider Tips

  • Tender or dock? Check your daily program the night before. Large ships often tender here; tender lines can be long at peak mid-morning — go early or wait until noon.
  • 🥾
Wear proper shoes. The old town is all cobblestones and steep stone steps. Flip-flops are fine for the beach, but closed shoes make the fort walk much safer.
  • 🏖️
Bring water shoes for the beaches. Most Elba beaches are pebble, not sand. A pair of water shoes dramatically improves the experience and lets you snorkel comfortably.
  • 🛵
Skip the taxi queue for Sansone beach — instead, ask at the port about the local mini-bus that runs in summer, or join a small group tour. The road is narrow and taxi supply is tight.
  • 🍰
Try schiaccia briaca — Elba's 'drunken cake' made with raisins, pine nuts, and Aleatico dessert wine. Any bakery in the old town sells it. It travels well back to the ship.

Taxis wait near the port entrance. The fare to the city center is roughly €10–13 based on a ~€1.40 base plus per-km metering. Useful for reaching beaches or villages further afield.

🚌 Public Bus (Elba Pass)

€10/day

The Bus Elbacard day pass covers all urban and suburban lines across the island including beach routes (Marebus). Good value if you plan to explore beyond Portoferraio.
