Where the jungle meets the Caribbean — Playa del Carmen blends European café culture with Mayan heritage, cenote swims, and one of the most vibrant pedestrian streets in the Americas.
Playa del Carmen has no large cruise pier — you'll arrive via ferry from Cozumel or taxi from Calica.
💡 Pro move: Quintana Roo does not observe Daylight Saving Time. Verify whether your ship time matches local time to avoid missing the last ferry back.
There is no deep-water cruise pier in Playa del Carmen itself — arrival is either by ferry from Cozumel or via the Calica industrial port to the south.

Playa del Carmen is the gateway to the Riviera Maya — cenotes, Mayan ruins, and world-class eco-parks are all within an hour.
Three stunning freshwater sinkholes clustered 20 minutes south of PDC via Colectivo or taxi. Crystal-clear water, dramatic limestone walls, and snorkeling. One of the best value activities on the Riviera Maya.
Find cenote tours →Perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean, Tulum is the most dramatically sited Mayan ruin in Mexico. About 50 minutes south by taxi or ADO bus. Allow 2 hours at the site.
Find Tulum tours →Xcaret blends Mayan cultural shows, wildlife, and underground river snorkeling. Xplor focuses on zip-lines, amphibious vehicles, and cave rafting. Both are 15 minutes from PDC — best for long port days of 9+ hours.
Find Xcaret & Xplor tours →A semi-submerged cave system of stalactites and stalagmites just 15 minutes from PDC. Guided tours wade and swim through illuminated chambers — surreal and unforgettable.
Find Rio Secreto tours →Pay a cover (usually redeemable against food/drinks) and claim a lounger on the Caribbean. Mamitas at Calle 28 is the lively social scene; Lido at Calle 10 is more laid-back. Both include shade umbrellas.
Find beach club day passes →Walk the 5th Avenue pedestrian strip from the Portal Maya sculpture through boutiques, street art, cafés, and performers. Watch the Voladores de Papantla spin from a ~100-foot pole in Parque Fundadores — completely free.
Book a PDC walking tour →The ferry pier drops you directly into PDC's walkable core — nearly everything worth seeing downtown is within 20 minutes on foot.
Start at the Portal Maya sculpture in Parque Fundadores, turn right onto Quinta Avenida, and walk north past cafés, boutiques, street art, and side-street murals. At Calle 28 cut left one block to Mamitas Beach for a swim or beach club lunch.
Walk south from the ferry pier along the beach path past Señor Frog's into the Playacar residential zone. The beach widens here with softer sand, fewer vendors, and a calmer vibe — best natural beach closest to the pier.
