Insider Tips

  • 🎟
Book Meyer Werft in advance. Tours sell out weeks ahead when a ship is under construction. Check meyerwerft.de before your cruise and reserve your slot.
  • 🚲
Rent a bike. This is the best way to see Papenburg. The town is completely flat, well-signed, and most highlights are within a 15-minute ride.
  • 💶
Carry cash. Smaller cafes, bakeries, and museums prefer cash — especially for purchases under €10. ATMs are available near the town hall.
  • 🍵
Try East Frisian tea. The regional specialty: strong black tea with a Kluntje (rock candy) at the bottom and a dollop of cream on top — do not stir! A ritual worth experiencing.
  • 🔒
Shops close Sundays. Like most of Germany, retail shops and supermarkets are shut on Sunday. Cafes and restaurants stay open — plan grocery or souvenir shopping for weekdays.
