Insider Tips

  • 🚲
Respect the bike lanes. Red-paved paths are for cyclists only — they move fast and have priority. Never walk in them or stand at the kerb edge. This is the number-one rule for surviving a visit to any Dutch city.
  • 💳
Go cashless. The Netherlands is nearly fully card-based; many cafes and shops refuse cash entirely. Visa/Mastercard work everywhere. Carry a contactless card, not coins.
  • 🗼
Climb the Martinitoren early. It opens at 10:00 AM; queues build by midday. Buy your ticket at the base — it's one of the best €6 views in the Netherlands.
  • 🚌
Know your last shuttle. Transfer from the pier to city takes 30–40 min each way. Confirm the last return shuttle time before going independent — missing it is an expensive taxi ride.
  • 🥚
Find a snack bar for the Eierbal. Groningen's famous deep-fried egg snack is sold at local frietkot (chip shops). It's genuinely unique and has earned a place on the Dutch National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage — don't leave without trying one.

€9.95 day pass

Varies by meter

Both Uber and Bolt are active in Groningen city. Most useful for getting around the city once you arrive; not a practical option for the 40 km port-to-city leg.

⛵ Canal Cruise (city)

€19.50–€24

Groningen's canal boat tours depart from the city center and offer a scenic 1-hour introduction to the city's historic waterways. Multiple operators available (Rondvaartbedrijf Kool, De Borrelvloot).
