Getting Ashore

Large cruise ships anchor in the bay and run tenders to the town quay; smaller luxury vessels can dock directly at the pier.

Getting Ashore in Otranto

  • 1
Tender or Walk OffLarge ships anchor offshore — board the ship's tender from the gangway. Small/expedition ships dock at Molo San Nicola and step directly ashore.
  • 2
From the Quay to the Old TownExit the harbor area and follow the lungomare (waterfront promenade) north for about 500 m — roughly 5–10 minutes on foot — to Porta Alfonsina, the main gate into the historic centre.
  • 3
Getting AroundThe centro storico is fully pedestrianised and compact. For the Bauxite quarry or Baia dei Turchi beach, take a taxi or rent an e-bike from stands near the harbor.

💡 Pro move: The limestone cobblestones are polished smooth and can be slippery even when dry — wear sturdy, non-slip shoes.

History

Otranto Cathedral & Martyrs Chapel

The entire nave floor is covered by an extraordinary 12th-century mosaic — a 'medieval visual encyclopaedia' depicting the Tree of Life, biblical scenes, King Arthur, and mythical beasts. The Martyrs Chapel holds the skulls of 800 citizens beheaded by Ottoman invaders in 1480 for refusing to convert.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear non-slip shoes. The old town's polished limestone cobblestones are beautiful but treacherously slippery — even on dry days.
  • 🕑
Plan around the riposo (siesta). Shops, restaurants, and even the cathedral can close 13:30–16:30. Hit the cathedral in the morning and beaches in the afternoon.
  • 💶
Bring small cash. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops, but keep a few euros for coffee, gelato, or the cathedral donation (turns on the crypt lights).
  • 🍮
Try a pasticciotto. This warm shortcrust pastry filled with lemon custard, ideally with a Caffè Leccese (iced espresso with almond milk), is the quintessential Puglian street snack.
  • 🚖
Taxi for outlying beaches. Baia dei Turchi (6 km north) is worth the short taxi ride. Confirm a return fare before you go — fares are reasonable.
