Insider Tips

  • 🚃
Get the tram day pass. ¥600 from the tourist desk near the pier — unlimited rides on the network that connects all major sights. Single fares are ¥150 but add up fast.
  • 💴
Bring cash. Japan remains highly cash-oriented. An ATM at the 7-Eleven near Dejima accepts foreign cards. Withdraw yen before heading to smaller restaurants or temples.
  • Pack a compact umbrella. Nagasaki is one of Japan's rainier ports. Summer calls (June-September) often coincide with the rainy season — a lightweight rain jacket is a good call.
  • 🕐
Peace Museum first. Visit the Atomic Bomb Museum early before tour groups arrive. It deserves at least 90 minutes; give yourself time to absorb it.
  • 🍜
Eat chanpon. Nagasaki's signature noodle dish — thick ramen in a milky seafood broth — is a local invention you won't find like this anywhere else. Try Shikairo near Chinatown.
