Atomic Bomb Museum & Peace Memorial Park
Ground zero of August 9, 1945. The museum presents an unflinching chronicle of the bombing through artifacts, photographs, and survivor accounts. Peace Park, steps away, holds the iconic 10-metre Peace Statue and a black granite vault listing victims' names.
A hillside open-air museum showcasing the mansions of 19th-century foreign merchants, including the Former Glover House — the oldest surviving Western-style wooden residence in Japan. Adjacent Oura Church, Japan's oldest Gothic church, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nagasaki's fan-shaped artificial island was Japan's sole window to the West during the Edo period — a Dutch trading post from 1641 to 1853. Today it's been faithfully reconstructed and tells a fascinating story of Japan's early globalisation.
Ranked among Japan's three greatest night views, Inasa's summit gives a panoramic sweep of the city and harbour glittering below. Reach the top by ropeway (gondola) in four minutes. Best if your ship stays late.
Nagasaki Chinatown is one of Japan's three major Chinatowns. Stroll lantern-strung alleys and stop for chanpon — the thick noodle soup invented here, loaded with seafood and vegetables.

Waterfront to Glover Garden Walk

From the Matsugae pier, head south along the waterfront to Dejima Island, continue through Chinatown to the base of Glover Garden. Climb the escalator-assisted path to the mansions for harbour panoramas.
Start at Peace Memorial Park, visit the Atomic Bomb Museum, then walk north to the Urakami Cathedral (Urakami Tenshudo) — rebuilt after the bomb destroyed the original. A quiet, reflective route.

Get the tram day pass. ¥600 from the tourist desk near the pier — unlimited rides on the network that connects all major sights. Single fares are ¥150 but add up fast.

Bring cash. Japan remains highly cash-oriented. An ATM at the 7-Eleven near Dejima accepts foreign cards. Withdraw yen before heading to smaller restaurants or temples.

Pack a compact umbrella. Nagasaki is one of Japan's rainier ports. Summer calls (June-September) often coincide with the rainy season — a lightweight rain jacket is a good call.
