Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Confirm your pier before planning: If you're at Ozai Wharf, the free shuttle to JR Oita Station is your lifeline. Don't miss it — taxis back can be scarce at busy times.
  • 💴
Carry cash: Local buses, taxis, izakayas, and street stalls are frequently cash only. ATMs at 7-Eleven and Japan Post offices accept foreign cards.
  • 🐒
Combine Takasakiyama + Umitamago: The monkey park and the aquarium are side by side on the Beppu Bay coast — budget 3–4 hours total and you'll cover both easily.
  • 🍋
Try kabosu: Oita's signature green citrus turns up on everything — noodles, fish, soft drinks, even craft beer. If something comes with a green citrus half, squeeze it.
  • 🔤
Less English here than Tokyo: Download Google Translate and enable the camera mode for reading menus and signs. Locals are friendly and patient — gesturing works fine.
