Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan

Kagoshima sits at the feet of Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes — a constant, smoke-puffing presence across the bay. Between a UNESCO garden, samurai streets, and a ferry to the caldera's edge, this southern Kyushu city punches well above its port-call weight.

Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Marine Port Kagoshima, a modern international terminal south of the city waterfront. The city center is about 5 km away — too far to walk comfortably.

Getting from the Ship to the City

  • 1
Shuttle bus (easiest)Most cruise lines and the local port authority run complimentary or low-cost shuttle buses to central Kagoshima (Kinko Bay waterfront / Dolphin Port area). Confirm with your ship before arriving.
  • 2
Tram / City View BusKagoshima has a tram network and the Kagoshima City View tourist bus (green bus). Buy a day pass at Kagoshima-Chuo Station or major stops. The City View route hits Shiroyama, Sengan-en, and the ferry terminal.
  • 3
TaxiTaxis queue outside the terminal. Metered, reliable, and drivers are honest — but have your destination in Japanese text or on maps, as English is limited outside tourist hubs.

💡 Pro move: The Sakurajima Ferry departs from the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal at Kagoshima Port (Main Port), a short walk or tram ride from the city center — not directly from the cruise pier.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Insider Tips

  • 🌋
Volcanic ash is real. Sakurajima erupts frequently — ash fall can reach the city on windy days. Carry an umbrella (shops sell ash-specific ones) and never rub ash in your eyes; rinse with water instead.
  • 💴
Carry yen for small purchases. Japan remains cash-preferred for street food, temples, and local stalls. ATMs at 7-Eleven and post offices reliably accept foreign cards.
  • 🚌
Buy a Kagoshima City View day pass. The green tourist bus loops all major sights including Shiroyama, Sengan-en, and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal for a flat day fee — far cheaper than taxis for multiple stops.
  • The Sakurajima ferry runs every 10–15 minutes during the day for just ¥250 each way. You don't need to book — just show up, buy a ticket, and board. Last ferry back is not an issue on a port day.
  • 🍖
Eat kurobuta (black pork) here. Kagoshima's Berkshire pork is justifiably famous — tonkatsu or shabu-shabu at a local restaurant beats any ship buffet. Tenmonkan is the obvious spot.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ UberUber operates as Uber Taxi in Kagoshima, partnering with licensed local taxi companies. Expanded city-wide in November 2025. App works normally; fares are metered taxi rates.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Kagoshima City View Bus is a sightseeing loop bus operated by the city — functions like a HOHO. Single ride ¥230 (adult), ¥120 (child). Day pass ¥600 adult / ¥300 child, also covers trams and city buses.

🚌 Cruise Shuttle

~–25 USD roundtrip

Ship-organized shuttle runs from Marine Port Kagoshima (8 km south of center) to Waterfront Park / ferry terminal area. Runs roughly every 15 minutes; check with your cruise line for timing and cost.

🚕 Taxi

¥2,800–¥3,400 (~–22 USD) one-way

Taxis wait at the port terminal — about 10 minutes to city center. Good value for groups of 3–4. Starting fare ¥560; metered thereafter.

📱 Uber Taxi

~¥1,758 avg (~$11 USD)

Book a local licensed taxi via the Uber app. Available throughout Kagoshima City (not Sakurajima). Average 13-minute ride to city center.

🚋 City Tram

¥170/ride or ¥1,300 day pass (CUTE Pass)

Once in the city center, Kagoshima's tram network covers major attractions efficiently. The CUTE Pass (¥1,300) adds unlimited city buses and the Sakurajima Ferry — excellent value for a full day.
