Getting Ashore

Cap-aux-Meules is the main port hub — but the islands' best attractions stretch along Route 199, which runs roughly 85 km from Havre-Aubert to Grande-Entrée, and require wheels.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Pier or tender depending on ship sizeExpedition and smaller vessels (Ponant, Silversea, Pearl Seas) usually dock directly at the commercial pier in Cap-aux-Meules. Holland America, Princess, and other large ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the marina — allow 20-30 min each way during busy periods.
  • 2
Book a rental car well in advanceRental fleets on the islands are tiny. Book months ahead through Agence de Location des Îles or Leblanc Location d'Autos. Without a car, you'll be limited to Cap-aux-Meules and whatever's reachable by e-bike.
  • 3
Consider the ship's shore excursionThis is one port where an organized bus tour genuinely earns its keep — it guarantees transport to Havre-Aubert, La Grave, and the outer beaches that you can't reach on foot.

💡 Pro move: Taxis exist but are scarce — always call ahead rather than expecting to flag one down. E-bike rentals near the pier are a great option for Cap-aux-Meules and Havre-aux-Maisons.

Insider Tips

  • 🌬️
Always pack a windbreaker. The Magdalen Islands are famously windy — even a 22°C sunny day can feel cold on the cliffs. Layers are non-negotiable.
  • 🚗
Book a rental car months in advance. Island fleets are tiny (10-20 vehicles total). Walk-up rentals on call day are essentially impossible.
  • 🦞
Eat the lobster. The Magdalen Islands fishery is world-renowned. Lobster season peaks May–June — if your call falls then, a fresh lobster roll at La Grave is unmissable.
  • Tender passengers: grab an early tender. Large-ship tenders can queue significantly during peak season. Prioritize early if you have a rental car or organized tour.
  • 🗺️
Pick up a free island map at the pier. The tourist information office near the dock has excellent English maps showing all six connected islands, beaches, and trail distances.
