Jarlshof Prehistoric & Norse Settlement
One of Europe's most remarkable archaeological sites, about 25 miles south near Sumburgh Head. Ruins spanning roughly 4,000 years — Neolithic houses, Bronze Age structures, Viking longhouses, and a 16th-century laird's mansion, all in one layered site. Managed by Historic Environment Scotland; admission around £7.

The southern tip of Shetland mainland hosts nesting puffins (May–early August), gannets, guillemots, and razorbills just meters from the clifftop paths. The RSPB-managed site also has a lighthouse visitor center.

A passenger ferry from Sandsayre Pier near Sandwick (about 13 miles / 20 min south of Lerwick) takes you to the uninhabited Isle of Mousa and the best-preserved Iron Age broch in the British Isles — around 2,000 years old and still standing about 13 m tall. Grey seals often bask on the beach.
The Up Helly Aa fire festival (January) is Shetland's most famous event — but from May to September the Galley Shed exhibition lets you see the full-size Viking galley, Jarl Squad suits, and memorabilia up close. Pair with a walk along Commercial Street.
About 17 miles southwest of Lerwick, the largest active sand tombolo in Britain connects a small island to the Shetland mainland. Walk across the ~500 m sand bar at low tide, spot seabirds, and enjoy some of the most photogenic scenery in Scotland.

Lerwick Old Town & Fort Charlotte

From Victoria Pier, head up to Commercial Street (the flagstone high street) and browse Shetland knitwear and craft shops. Detour to the Lodberries — 18th-century stone warehouses built into the sea, familiar to fans of the Shetland TV series. Continue uphill to Fort Charlotte, a 17th-century star-shaped artillery fort with panoramic views over Bressay Sound.
A flat walk west from the town center leads to Clickimin Broch, a remarkably well-preserved Bronze and Iron Age stone roundhouse on the edge of a loch. You can walk inside and climb ancient stone stairs. Free entry.

Dress in layers, always. Shetland weather can deliver sun, rain, and wind within the same hour. A windproof, waterproof jacket and a warm hat are non-negotiable — even in summer.
