Self-Guided Walks & Hikes

Stromness is tailor-made for on-foot exploration — the flagstone main street and harbour piers are the attraction.

The Main Street End to End

1 mile | Easy | 30–40 min one way

Walk the full length of Stromness's remarkable main street — Victoria Street, Dundas Street, and Graham Place — from the Ferry Terminal at the north to Stromness Museum at the south. The street has no pavement; pedestrians share the old flagstones with slow-moving local traffic. Branch off into the narrow 'closes' (alleyways) toward the sea for private stone piers, or up the hill for views.

Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Pack for four seasons in one day. Orkney is famously changeable and always windy. Bring a windproof, waterproof jacket even in summer — sunshine can turn to horizontal rain within the hour.
  • 🚕
Book taxis well in advance. Taxis in Orkney are extremely scarce. If you want to visit Neolithic sites independently, book days ahead — or take the local bus from Stromness Travel Centre.
  • 🎨
Don't skip the Pier Arts Centre. It's free, it's excellent, and it's right at the harbour. One of the best small galleries in Scotland.
  • 🏛️
Skara Brae needs a booking. Entry to Skara Brae (Historic Environment Scotland) should be booked online before your cruise arrives — it can sell out on busy days.
  • 💳
Cards accepted everywhere. Even small cafes and shops take contactless payments. ATMs are available at the bank on the main street.
