Foula Island, Shetland, Scotland

Edge of the world, edge of the Atlantic. Foula is a 3-mile scrap of rock supporting 30 people, half a million seabirds, and some of Britain's most vertiginous cliffs — reached only by tender, weather permitting.

⚓ Tender only (no cruise berth)🕒 Typical call: 4–6 hrs💷 Currency: GBP (cash only)🗣️ Language: English🐦 Best May–Aug for seabirds
Docking
Tender to Ham Voe pier — weather-dependent; cancellations common
Walk to centre
~30 min (1.5 mi) from pier to Hametoun; cliffs 2–3 miles on rough terrain
Best For
Birdwatching, dramatic hiking, remote island atmosphere
Don't Miss
Da Kame cliffs (1,220 ft sheer drop) and the bonxie colony

Getting Ashore

All cruise visitors arrive by tender or Zodiac — there is no quay capable of docking any size of ship.

Getting Ashore at Foula

  • 1
Tender to Ham VoeShips anchor in open water and ferry passengers via Zodiacs or ship's tenders to the small concrete pier at Ham Voe on the island's east side. The operation is weather-dependent — the captain may cancel if swells are too high.
  • 2
No transport on islandOnce ashore, you travel on foot along a single-track road or off-road across boggy peat. There are no taxis, buses, or rental vehicles.
  • 3
Plan your return timeWatch your ship's all-ashore time carefully. There are no communication options on the island — mobile signal is effectively zero. Download offline maps before leaving.

💡 Pro move: Landing is sometimes cancelled by the captain even after arrival in the anchorage. Always treat Foula as a 'bonus' port and have a sea-day mindset.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Foula has a tiny working pier at Ham Voe used by the inter-island ferry — not a cruise terminal.

Top Excursions

Foula has no commercial tour operators on the island — your ship's naturalist guide or a local islander arranged by the cruise line is your best resource.

Nature

Da Kame Cliff Walk

The island's crown jewel: a 1,220-foot sheer sandstone wall dropping straight into the Atlantic. The hike from Ham Voe is roughly 2.5 miles each way over boggy upland — strenuous but extraordinary. Stay well back from the unfenced edge.

⏱ 4–5 hrs round trip🥾 Strenuous, wet terrain📷 Unmissable views

Wildlife

Bonxie & Puffin Colony

Foula hosts one of the world's largest Great Skua (bonxie) colonies alongside thousands of nesting puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, and razorbills. The cliffs on the south and west sides are the prime seabird areas. Bring binoculars and a stick to hold above your head to deter diving bonxies.

History

Hametoun & Post Office

The island's tiny settlement at Hametoun is roughly a 1.5-mile (30-minute) walk south from the pier along the single-track road. The post office sells postcards and occasional local knitwear. Foula follows the Julian Calendar — islanders celebrate Yule on January 6th and New Year on January 13th. Michael Powell filmed 'The Edge of the World' here in 1936 using locals as cast.

Adventure

Gaada Stack & North Coast

A striking natural sandstone sea arch on the island's north end, about 2 miles from the pier. The walk offers dramatic coastal scenery and a good chance of spotting grey and common seals hauled out on the rocks below.

Shetland Pony Spotting

Foula is home to a genetically distinct strain of Shetland ponies that roam freely across the island. They're photogenic and approachable but should not be fed. Look for them along the road and in the moorland north of Hametoun.

Ham Voe to Da Kame Cliffs

2.5 miles · Strenuous · 1.5–2 hrs each way

Head west from the pier, climbing steeply over boggy peat moorland to the cliff edge above Da Kame. The terrain is pathless in places — expect wet feet and wind. The payoff is one of the most dramatic seabird cliffs in Britain. Stay back from the unfenced edge.

Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Dress for everything. Foula weather changes within minutes. Waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, and proper hiking boots are non-negotiable if you leave the road.
  • 🐦
Bonxie defence: Great Skuas will dive-bomb your head during nesting season (May–Aug). Hold a walking stick or umbrella vertically — they target the highest point, sparing your face.
  • 💷
Cash only, bring it from the ship. No ATM, no card readers. If you want a postcard or local wool, bring British Pounds in small notes.
  • 📵
Zero mobile signal. Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) before going ashore. Your ship's satellite Wi-Fi won't help you on the hill.
  • 🚪
Close every gate. You are walking through working crofts. Gates left open let sheep and ponies stray — a serious problem for farmers on a tiny island.
